Charlene and Bruce are establishing orchards at Imperial located at a mid point between Regina, Saskatoon, and Moose Jaw. They primarily grow cherries, although have raspberries producing and possibility can see Haskaps (blue honeysuckles) in their future.

They believe strongly in working with nature to produce a safe healthy food for consumers. Reduced reliance on chemicals was a strong motivator in selecting the U of S developed cherries.

Their main orchard is in grassland. Rows were planted in cultivated strips inside an eight foot high deer fence.cultivating strips preplanting They are utilizing water in a trickle irrigation system under plastic mulch that is environmentally friendly in that it uses a minimal amount of water with reduced evaporation. "weeks after plantingThe U of S cherries benefit from added water in the first three years of establishment" and is an option beyond that phase in their orchards.

They are both keenly interested in working with other producers to find the optimum processes from site selection to processing to consumer. Thus they are proud to be part of the team at Canadian Cherry Producers Inc.

They readily acknowledge the dedication and expertise that is available through the University of SK, Sask Ag & Food, Irrigation Specialists at Outlook, SK Economic Development, SK Watershed Authority, and especially other growers. It is not uncommon to hear growers say "I don't know the best way...but this sure didn't work for me". We don't like singling people out but Dr. Bob Bors and Rick Sawatsky deserve so much credit for their passion and perseverance over decades Charlene & U of S applesin the fruit programbuilding character at the U of S. They have made it possible for us to grow fruit profitably on the Canadian Prairies.

"I can see that growers who plant in the future will reap huge benefits from the CCPI. Knowing that soil sampling, and deer exclusion fence are not options, they are necessary in most parts of the prairies. Hopefully we will have information that will make orchard establishment and care a step by step process for new growers."

Our farm gets its inputs handcrafted from the air, sun, and the earth. Our love for our family, as you love your family, allows us to overcome adversity, be part of a healthy community, and, most of all, we are proud to be able to provide a product that you and your family will love.

"We have been fortunate to have had so many different opportunities during our lives. We have had the opportunity to work alongside so many great people. team buildingBut this phase is so exciting that the rest pale. All the hurdles in life seem to come into perspective when caring for a new plant with your hands in the dirt, not on the controls of 300 horsepower."

To keep busy, Bruce and Charlene operate Pacific PhotoGraphics, a multimedia production company that takes your pictures, your music, and your memories and puts them on DVD. "It is truly rewarding to see the tears of joy and memories that flood from our customers when they see their pictures displayed in a manner that captures their story for future generations an important part of their history." Cornerstone Educational Services Inc. also operates out of their home in computer sales and repair, and web site design and maintenance.

We are a family farm business developed in 2002 by husband and wife team, Will & Genevieve. moi et mon beau tracteurOriginally started with plans for a U-Pick fruit farm, we have expanded into agriculture tourism via the Corn Maze. Our objective is to develop a business that will produce enough income to send out two kids to college/university and ourselves a fun retirement.

With the development of commercially viable Saskatoon G2Sand Sour Cherry cultivars, we expanded into commercial production of these fruits crops. Honeyberries (Haskap), apples, strawberries and raspberries have also been planted to provide a variety of fruits for picking.

We invite you to come out and spend some pleasurable time with your children or partner picking fruitcorn maze or just walking through the Corn Maze. New themes are being planned for each year of the corn maze. We are anticipating U-Pick production levels on our strawberries and raspberries for 2007 and look forward to having you out for Berries and Maze treks.

elder logoWe are establishing a sour cherry and haskap orchard on our home quarter located on the East bank of the South Saskatchewan River near Outlook.   7,400 U of S Sour Cherries, Carmine Jewel and Romeo varieties, were planted in 2006.  In 2008, we planted 1,270 U of S Haskap (blue honeysuckle), Tundra and Berry Blue varieties.  You can view some photos of our orchard on this website’s photo gallery.

The orchard has necessitated the construction of a deer fence around the entire quarter, allowing the irrigation pivot to continue its usual circular path unobstructed by the fence.  The circular shaped orchard rows are mulched with flax straw and are irrigated with this overhead sprinkler, commonly called a “pivot”.

As we have been producing certified organic grain for the past few years, we anticipate production of certified organic fruit from our orchard as well.

We recognize the importance of the work done by Dr. Bob Bors and Rick Sawatsky at the University of Saskatchewan in the development of a fruit industry for Saskatchewan.  It has provided farmers a much needed opportunity for agricultural diversification in this province. We CAN grow fruit in this province; we ARE growing fruit in this province and their years of work WILL bear much fruit!

We invite you to come and visit us, take a walk through the orchard, enjoy the view of the South Saskatchewan and see for yourself that the “Sask-Born” cherry industry is well on its way!
